Poetry Thursday: Edna St Vincent Millay!
Desk Set is a wonderful film!
I just looked online and saw that there’s a Penguin complete novels of Nancy Mitford. I like the version you have better though, because that cover is lovely.
Hey Steve! Great book haul. It was me that you sent the book on Shiloh. Thank you. Glad you found another copy.
The Cincinnati Kid was a 1965 movie with Steve McQueen, Edward G Robinson, Ann Margaret, Tuesday Weld, et al. I watched it some years ago and found it enjoyable, although I’m not very familiar with poker. You should enjoy it. 😺✌️
Definitely a find with the Anne B novel/bio. Many readers have a challenge to believe a plain or mildly attractive woman could enchant a man of note for years without great beauty, this often is how real life differs from romance novels. Anne was supposed to be a woman of elegance with great wit and it was that quality that drew the King to her.
Man it was so hard to find a sound mind for recomendations. Most people making this kind of videos are insane! Also, great intro.
Good haul!
I need to learn to reinforce and repair books. I found an interesting poetry collection in my dad's attic that I love but the material on the spine has come off almost completely. My dad would have just put duct tape on it. Ha. I'm thinking of gluing it but can't decide if there's some reason that might be a bad idea or not.
Congrats on your Nightwing compendium. I very much agree that the gaying of general entertainment is boring and tiresome. Why should 5% of the population have to do 100% of the work? I wish this was well and truly a free country, but we both know that it is not. There are always various groups trying to legislate what other groups can legally do. 😺✌️
Btw, during the pandemic, Titans, the series on HBOMAX, was quite a welcome diversion. The live-action characters are definitely different from the comics, but cuter, too. I also enjoyed the live-action series Doom Patrol, also on max.
What about Pigeon Pie, Wigs on the Green, Christmas Pudding? They are all novels by Nancy Mitford.
There is a Robin; JSA, and Joker compendium
Yes - Robin, but not Batman? JSA, but not JLA? Joker BEFORE Batman? Very strange!
That’s quite the book haul!
It'll take me all weekend to read these!
@@saintdonoghue I'm sure you can do it! .... It would take me all year to read that pile of books!
The next time I come over there I’m going to bring my own list of questions! I’m not as smart as Hannah though so they won’t be as good. They will probably mostly be about Kryptonians and Cimmerians.
I think a playlist is a great idea, but vets easy to say and sounds like a lot of work. Do we want less SD content, not likely! I to am loving this read through, qnd have the book. Coincidentally, the Penguin Classics Deluxe volume of Dorothy Parker came this week. Spooky, am I now foreseeing Steve's content before it happens? Have I gone witchy, nah too rooted in books for that. Thanks for this series Steve, it's fascinating.
I've read Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate this year so Don't Tell Alfred is up next for me, it's a shame she didn't write more because I've loved them.
World War books always delight the literary senses, kinda like the way carrots excite bunnies
The weather is much nicer today (7/26) at least in northern Worcester County. Sitting here with a cool breeze and enjoying Chapter 17. Thank you, thank you.
I always laugh at Mary, because let's get real, we readers are all useless to society; stuffing our heads with pompous and philosophical nonsense.
Oh yes, I would love a playlist of these videos too. This anthology has been a lot of fun and I always love the poetry thursdays.
I’m always here, watching and enjoying your poetry videos. Do keep them coming.
hi, I appreciate your entusiasm and really like the sincerity of your reviews, I'll love you to review one of my favorite books of all, it's called "Hopscotch" or "Rayuela" I've read it 3 times by now and still can pick new ideas from it, truly wonderful, so that's the book I'll recommend you, have a great week!
I watch all of your poetry videos, Steve. They’re wonderful!
“I believe and I stand by those blurbs” (7:22). Indeed, Steve. You are a man of your blurb. 😀
I disagree with the Captain America choice. I can see where he's coming from, but I would say that Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's Fantastic Four is far more influential on superhero comics today than Joe Simon and Jack Kirby's Captain America.
About Tasha Alexander's Lady Emily books - the first one didn't do anything for me. It wasn't lousy, it was just okay-but-I-like-others-better. Still I decided to stick with the series. By about the third book, they started getting good, a lot of fun. Moral is, stick with the series for at least 3 books. Author and characters will grow.
I enjoy Dorothy Parker's observations on life, not sure I would call them poems, but like a number of Literary Figures- she had a larger than life reputation. People like Robert Benchley, HL Mencken, Hemingway, even F. Scott Fitzgerald towered over their works. I would even put Gore Vidal and the other mid-century misanthrope Norman Mailer as well.
If you'd let me induce even more chaos into the chat. Where's HG Wells?!
Oh, I am definitely paying attention to your poetry videos, Steve! 😉 Thank you for continuing to do these episodes even when you don't particularly like the poem(s) of the day.
Thank you for not using your own dreaminess for evil. (or have I been duped?)
Heee - tune in to future chapters to find out!
'they exchange a glance that could melt butter'😂😂😂
Your enthusiasm is a joy to watch. 😊
Love your readings of the Dune books. I thought the movies were both amazing, you missed the mark on this review! lol! I look forward to the 3rd movie and the miniseries. I still like you. Thanks for your opinion, it was fun to watch
I wonder what the creator of the Mrs. Wiggs books would make of the Cabbage Patch dolls craze in the '80s.
One of my very favorite poems, thank you for sharing!
That's a thought -- cutting the cover of the Welty book to make a bookmark (don't forget to recycle) -- but I would scan it and print onto heavy watercolor paper. I've used this technique to make fake bookmarks for imaginary bookstores before, and it works very well.
Oddly, I'm mostly here for Roman stuff -- it was what first attracted me -- and I was unaware of the meme you mention. It has since become obvious that you have much more than the "Roman stuff" to offer, but that is what I'm interested in at the moment.
Thank you for drawing attention to Animal Liberation. If there is such a thing as a great man, Peter Singer surely is one.
Thanks Steve. You got it right when you said Marvel Comics titles became GRADUALLY great. Agreed. Moreover, Stan Lee made use of DC COMICS errors. So,step by step his DEFENDERS and X Men or Avengers became much better versions of The Legion of SuperHeroes or Justice League of America or other groups. But I may be wrong. Thanks again Steve for your profound insights.
Great list and video. But I wished to see Gormenghast here.
I can't believe Bunnicula made your top 20.
I fully admit that, when I first read this, Austen fooled me at every turn. At this point I really did think Darcy was the worst of the worst and Wickham was a dreamboat. It felt a little like falling for the red herring in the Agatha Christie novel. You feel duped, but also tip your hat to the author and say "well played!"
Man, what I would give for a collection like yours!
Great stuff as always Steve!
Fantastic review of the Thor mythos!! 🤘🏻😁
The first time I read P&P, I naively rooted for Wickham and gave him the benefit of the doubt until Mr. Gardiner’s letter to Mr. Bennett. He’s so handsome and has such exquisite manners, he can only be a good man, right? Sigh…
Remember when we all thought the same thing about Micah Cummins? Oh, how naive we all were!
you are just the type of person i want to hear opinions about books. I don't like people who use books as an aesthetic factor for channel, i only want to get mere reviews and criticisms.
We don't like Wickham! Watch out! 😮
But he's so DREAMY!
